Registered Dental Hygienist

Job Purpose:

Provides dental hygiene services according to licensing protocols and under the appropriate supervision

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

(Note: Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at the sole discretion of Sycuan Management at any time)

  1. Greets patients, making them feel at ease
  2. Seats and dismiss patients that present for hygiene services
  3. Obtains necessary x-rays as directed by the dentist
  4. Helps prepare the treatment tray in preparation for dental care
  5. Assists the dentist within established licensing and supervisory limitations
  6. Adheres to standards for infection control and personal protection in accordance with SMDC, local, state and federal OSHA regulations
  7. Disinfects the dental operatory prior to and after patient care
  8. Maintains the dental unit according to protocol
  9. Replenishes the dental unit distilled water supply
  10. Maintains, sterilizes and disinfects all x-ray machines, operatory equipment, dental attachments, procedure instruments and other equipment utilized during daily operations
  11. Performs operation of eyewash stations, emergency resuscitation gear, defibrillator and fire extinguishers according to protocol
  12. Obtains patient signatures on treatment plans, consent forms, referral consultations, information release waivers and notification of SMDC practice policies
  13. Manages electronic chart documents for FAX, scan and email in accordance with current policy and HIPAA restrictions
  14. Reports workplace hazards and safety issues promptly according to SMDC and OSHA regulations
  15. Complies with the posted General Industry Safety Orders Code of Safe Practices
  16. Maintains strict confidentiality with regard to all components of the patient dental record, other personal information acquired during the performance of job duties and concerning SMDC and interdepartmental discussions
  17. Attends all full staff and departmental meetings
  18. Attends and participates in all SMDC drills, trainings and unscheduled meetings conducted during hours of operation
  19. Performs all job functions in compliance with SMDC policies and procedures

Under indirect supervision

  1. Performs extra-oral duties or functions in compliance with the California Dental Board Committee on Registered Dental Hygienists as directed by the supervising dentist
  2. Operates dental radiographic equipment for the purpose of oral radiography in compliance with section 1656 of the California Business and Professions Code

Under direct supervision

  1. Performs patient care duties in compliance with the California Dental Board Committee on Registered Dental Hygienists as directed by the supervising dentist

Job Specifications:

Education and Experience:

Essential:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D
  • California Registered Dental Hygienist certificate
  • California dental x-ray license
  • California coronal polishing certificate
  • California cavitron scaler certificate
  • California dental sealant certificate
  • Healthcare provider CPR training

Desirable:

  • Dental receptionist experience
  • Tribal clinic experience

Skills and Knowledge:

Essential:

  • Mastery of dental office procedures
  • Proficient in the use of electronically based dental practice management systems
  • Thorough knowledge of laws and regulations governing the management of dental records
  • Ability to speak, read and write in the English language
  • Ability to use of a Windows based computer
  • Ability to type 30 words per minute
  • Proficient in the use of a FAX, scanner and copy machine
  • Proficient in the use of E-mail and Internet web search browser
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with patients and staff
  • Ability to complete forms and documents
  • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to maintain a professional appearance and demeanor
  • Ability to appear for work on time
  • Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to perform repetitive bending, reaching, pulling and pushing tasks
  • Ability to accept constructive criticism

Desirable:

  • Understanding of Native American culture and customs
  • Mastery of the Dentrix dental practice management system
  • Multi-lingual
  • Mastery of Windows-based computer programs
  • Proficiency in the use of NextGen electronic record system
